Olive and Abel enter the kitchen freshly showered, their faces bright, their eyes red, and I know they've been crying all day, same as me. Still, I'm glad they're taking care of themselves.

“So did you find anything out?” Olive asks Boone.

I appreciate my twelve-year-old daughter's ability to speak up, to ask questions when she needs an answer. It's what I want for her. It's why we're here, why we left Garden Temple.

“I'm sorry, Olive, but the news isn't exactly what we hoped for,” Boone tells her honestly.

“So what is it?” Abel asks, his voice harder, hoarse.

“Your dad didn't take Ruthie,” I say. “Last night, he was holding a service at the church, so he couldn't have been in both places.”

“Maybe someone else took her,” Abel says. “Maybe there was another guy doing his dirty work.”

“We have no reason to believe that is the case,” Boone says. “He wasn’t even aware that you had come to your mother's house,” he says.

Abel frowns. “Does he know now? Did you tell him where I went?” Boone and Callahan share a glance. I hate their secrets. They're starting to bother me more than I'd like.

“Your father knows you're here, yes,” he says.

“Why'd you go and do that?” Abel asks. He looks at me. “Mom, why did you let them blow my cover?”

“I didn't let anybody do anything,” I say, “and first of all, I gave an interview this morning clearly showing where we were. But it's probably better that your father knows where you are, especially now. This is a big deal. Ruthie's gone,” I say. “And I know you have issues with your dad. I have issues with your dad, but this isn't the time to argue about them. I don't care if Jeremiah knows where we are now. I'm glad he does. I'm glad I don't have to hide constantly, worried that he's going to come find me.”

I'm shouting. I never shout, but I don't care.

“You know how long I was scared of your dad hurting me?” I ask my children. “I've been scared of your father since I was fourteen years old. I've been scared not just of him finding me, but of him touching me, of him using me, of him fighting me, of him threatening me. I'm done with it,” I seethe. “I'm done letting Jeremiah have power over me. I'm done.”

My children are stunned, and Boone and Callahan are too. And to be honest, I'm stunned myself. I never do this, lay it out there, put all my cards on the table. But I'm dead serious when I say I have nothing left to lose. Jeremiah doesn't have Ruthie. But somebody does. And I'm not going to stand here and be scared of the man who hurt me for so long when there are bigger things at stake.

“I’m done hiding from him. If he wants to come after me, he can. But he won't,” I say. “He never cared about me. He never needed me. When I left a year ago, I thought he did.
